چکیده

A mathematical model and computer code for simulat ing electrokinetic fluid and sample manipulations in microfabricated fluidic devices (microchips) are described. The model accounts for mass transport mechanisms such as electrophoretic migration, bulk fluid motion due to electroosmosis, and diffusion. The interactive computer program implementing the model is capable of handling different channel geometries with various boundary conditions for the electric field distribution and sample concentration. Several microchip elements have been modeled and particular attention has been paid to the electrokinetic injection, one of the primary elements in microchip operation. The results obtained in the modeling have been compared with experimental data.

Fluidic Oscillators’ Applications, Structures and Mechanisms – A Review

Enhancement of heat and mass transfer and decrease of energy dissipation are great necessities of the evolution of fluid flow devices. Utilizing oscillatory or pulsatile fluid flow for periodic disturbing of velocity and thermal boundary layers is one of the methods with exciting results. Passive methods of generating oscillatory flow are preferred to active methods because of simplicity, no ne...

Particle imaging techniques for microfabricated fluidic systems

This paper presents the design and implementation of velocimetry techniques applicable to the analysis of microfluidic systems. The application of both micronresolution particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) to the measurement of velocity fields within micromachined fluidic channels is presented. The particle tracking system uses epifluorescent microscopy...

Dielectrophoresis in microchips containing arrays of insulating posts: theoretical and experimental results.

Dielectrophoresis (DEP), a nonlinear electrokinetic transport mechanism, can be used to concentrate and sort cells, viruses, and particles. To date, microfabricated DEP-based devices have typically used embedded metal electrodes to apply spatially nonuniform, time-varying (AC) electric fields. We have developed an alternative method in which arrays of insulating posts in a channel of a microchi...

Electrokinetic trapping and concentration enrichment of DNA in a microfluidic channel.

We report a simple and efficient method for enriching the concentration of charged analytes within microfluidic channels. The method relies on exerting spatial control over the electrokinetic velocity of an analyte. Specifically, the electroosmotic (eo) velocity of the buffer solution in one region of the microfluidic system opposes the electrophoretic (ep) velocity of the analyte in the other ...
